How to Prepare for Your Professional Headshot Session

Hi, I’m Kim, a professional photographer in Yuma, AZ, with over 18 years of experience helping clients look their best. My studio is located in the heart of downtown Yuma, and I specialize in creating headshots that make a lasting impression. A professional headshot is more than just a photo—it’s your first impression, your personal brand, and your opportunity to connect with your audience. Whether you’re updating your LinkedIn profile, refreshing your company website, or building a personal brand, preparation is key to making the most of your session. Here’s a step-by-step guide to ensure you’re ready for your professional headshot session with me.

Define Your Purpose

Before your session, think about where and how you’ll use your headshot. Are you creating a polished corporate image, a warm and approachable personal brand, or a creative and dynamic look for the arts? Knowing your purpose helps us align on style, mood, and composition. For example, a professional headshot for LinkedIn might differ from one used for social media branding or business cards.

Choose Your Wardrobe Carefully

Your clothing plays a significant role in your headshot’s overall impression. Follow these tips for selecting the right outfit:

Stick to Solid Colors: Patterns can be distracting and date your photo quickly. Neutral tones or solid colors work best and are ideal for professional headshots and branding photography. If you do love patterns, I suggest choosing small patterns with muted colors for best results.

Dress for Your Industry: Match your attire to your profession and audience. A lawyer might choose a tailored suit, while a creative entrepreneur could opt for something more casual yet polished.

Avoid Distracting Accessories: Keep jewelry and accessories minimal to avoid pulling focus from your face. If you do enjoy a statement piece, be sure it matches your style and the overall look of the you are trying to create.

Bring Options: If you are unsure of which outfit will work best for your headshots, feel free to bring 2-3 to choose from. I am always happy to help clients choose outfits that will photograph amazing and communicate the message you wish to convey in your final image.

Plan for Grooming and Hygiene

Hair: Get a haircut or trim about a week before the session. Also, be sure to refresh your color including root touchups. Avoid experimenting with new styles or colors close to the shoot.

Skin: Stay hydrated follow a skin routine a week before your session.

For women I highly recommend a professional makeup artist for the best results. He/she will know how to apply makeup so that it will show up on camera. Studio lighting often washes out light makeup and features. If you are doing your own makeup, I recommend wearing a little more than usual. If you do not wear makeup, I do suggest wearing at least a light powder, mascara and a lip balm or gloss.

Facial Hair: For men, shave or groom facial hair the morning of the shoot. For women, do not forget about your brows and any other facial hair that will show in bright lighting.

Teeth: Don’t forget to floss those pearly whites!
