How We Created an Editorial Senior Portrait Experience in Yuma, Arizona

Senior portraits should be more than a few nice photos.

They should tell a story.

One of my favorite recent senior sessions perfectly captured what I love most about creating editorial-style senior portraits. Every detail was thoughtfully planned, every location had a purpose, and most importantly, the images reflected who she truly is.

Natalia, former Miss Ocean to Ocean, brought confidence, style, and personality to her session, but what made these portraits special wasn’t just the beautiful outfits or locations. It was the planning that happened long before the camera ever came out.

Every Great Senior Session Begins With A Plan

One of the biggest differences between my senior experience and a traditional portrait session is that we don’t simply show up and hope for the best.

Before Natalia’s session, we met to plan every detail together.

We talked through wardrobe, accessories, hair, makeup, locations, and the overall feeling she wanted her images to have. Every outfit was paired with a specific location, creating a gallery that felt cohesive while still offering incredible variety.

That planning process allows us to create photographs that feel intentional instead of random.

Bringing Her Vision To Life

Natalia’s session included several completely different looks throughout Yuma.

We began in my studio with clean, modern portraits before heading downtown for an urban editorial feel.

Next, we photographed along the beautiful river near West Wetlands Park, creating images that felt timeless and elegant.

Finally, we wrapped up with one of my favorite locations of the day, Jack in the Box.

It may sound unexpected, but that’s exactly what made it so fun.

Editorial photography is all about thinking creatively and using locations in ways that help tell your story. Sometimes the most memorable images come from places people would never expect.
